10 Thoughts on the Raiders v. Titans Game:

I had a hard time picking this game. Both teams are up and coming. Tennessee just barely missed the playoffs last year. Oakland surprised everyone by winning twelve games last year. It would be very easy for both teams to take a step back.

  1. Raiders offense looks really good. The additions of Marshawn Lynch and Jarrod Cook only makes them look more dangerous.
  2. Raiders secondary still looked shaky. It was their Achilles heel last season and I am not certain they have improved.
  3. Marshawn Lynch looked good. He was quick and strong and making great cuts. The Raiders just have to keep him healthy and fresh for the entire season.
  4. Adoree Jackson (a favorite of the 1A Sports Blog) is going to be a formidable corner and kick returner for the Titans.
  5. The Raiders made an effort to get the ball to Amari Cooper. He rewarded them with a hard-fought touchdown. He also dropped a bunch of passes.
  6. Marcus Marriotta is a legit NFL quarterback. He made some great throws and he ran for a touchdown.
  7. For the first time since 2001, the Raiders do not have Sebastian Janikowski on the roster. They put him on IR Sunday morning.
  8. There was a 2:1 ratio of touches for Demarco Murray and Derrick Henry. I guess Murray is the premier back for now.
  9. Delanie Walker should be in the Top 5 tight end discussion. His seven catches for seventy-six yards lead the Titans receivers.
  10. Rashard Matthews is Marriotta’s go to guy with five catches for seventy-one yeards.

10 Thoughts on the Seahawks v. Packers Game:

This was the game I was looking forward to the most in Week 1 and it did not let me down. Both teams came ready to play. These teams have history and they do not like each other.

  1. Both defenses came to ball! It was 3-0 Seahawks at the end of the first half.
  2. Jeremy Lane ejection was unnecessary and a game changer. Took away a touchdown and Seattle’s second best corner.
  3. Seattle’s offense was terrible in the first half. They were saved by the defense and a great two minute drill.
  4. Mike Daniels killed the Seahawks offensive line. They had no idea what to do with this guy. Russell Wilson will be seeing him in his nightmares tonight.
  5. Based on the protection he got from that offensive line, Russell Wilson is pretty amazing.
  6. Seahawks defense was completely worn down by the 4th quarter. They were on the field too much and for too long.
  7. Aaron Rodgers was in rare form. I love that he gets up for big games.
  8. The Green Bay defense is legit.
  9. Randall Cobb is back to being the #2 receiver in Green Bay.
  10. Still not sure who the running back in Seattle is going to be.

Episode 5 – Message to Dodger Fans, Fantasy Draft Results and NFL Divisional Predictions

In Episode 5, Langston Aron and Craig Aron discuss their fantasy draft in the No Fun League fantasy football league. Craig Aron makes an impassioned case for Dodger fans not to lose their mind with the current losing streak. Finally the Arons make predictions for divisional winners in the NFL.

Episode 3 – Basketball Terminology & Mock Draft Monday

Langston Aron and Craig Aron discuss some basketball terminology they use as part of the 1A Sports Podcast and their most recent mock drafts. When it comes to terminology, you have to understand when we say that a basketball player is “Dead to Me” and when a player is a “Bullfighter”. Get ready for your upcoming draft by learning from their picks and analysis of their decisions.

Mock Draft Monday Podcast

This is Episode 1 of the 1a Sports Podcast so be gracious and merciful. It will only get better as we work on the kinks.

Mock Draft Monday – Rounds 5-8

As discussed in my previous post, every Monday between now and the beginning of the NFL season. I will also be giving my analysis of the draft and what I am learning from my picks. So let’s get to it.

Round 5 – Travis Kelce – TE – Kansas City

By this point in the draft I have 3 wide receivers and one running back. I felt this was the best time to lock down a Top 5 tight end. The tight end is the kind of player that can turn a whole league in your favor. Having a Top 5 tight end is a great advantage. A prolific scoring tight end is an unicorn. In order to win a league, you require a Top 5 tight end. I have spent the last two years of fantasy football messing around with mid-level tight ends and all the frustrations that come with them. This year, my plan is to grab a Top 5 tight end early to make sure I am set up for victory.

That is where Travis Kelce comes in. Arguably he is #2 or #3 in the tight end ranks. He can turn the league in my favor. He has the speed of a wide receiver with the size and difficulty to tackle of a tight end. As long as he is injury free, he destined for high targets and lots of end zone looks.

Round 6 – Greg Olson – TE – Carolina

Greg Olson is arguably the #2 or #3 tight end in the NFL. By grabbing Travis Kelce in Round 5 and Olson in Round 6, I have given myself some options in the my flex position. I have taken an equalizer off the board from other teams. I can also use the Olson or Kelce as trade bait. If I fail to snag a satisfactory running back in later rounds, I can use Kelce or Olson to get a better back from someone who cannot draft a satisfactory tight end.

Round 7 – Carlos Hyde – RB – San Francisco

At this point in the draft, I was looking for another running back. Carlos Hyde was the best back still on the board. With Kyle Shanahan coaching the 49ers and Brian Hoyer being the starting quaterback, I believe that Hyde is in for a heavy carry season. The big issue is whether he can stay healthy. He also does a decent job catching the ball.

Round 8 – Matthew Stafford – QB – Detroit

This is the point in the draft when the run on quarterbacks began. I chose Matthew Stafford because he is durable and you know what you are going to get with him. He is constantly improving under the Jim Bob Cooter offense. He got better lineman and he puts up fantasy points. Maybe if I had gone a round or two early, I could have gotten a Brees, Brady or Rodgers. However with Stafford, I have three top 15 receivers and two Top 5 tight ends. I have a team that I can make the playoffs with this team.

Mock Draft Monday

Today marks the beginning of our Fantasy Football season here at 1A Sports Blog. Langston Aron and myself have both done mock drafts and we will walk you through our picks and why we made them. This may help understand where certain players should be taken and it will also help you figure out how to prioritze your picks within the draft itself.

My Draft

The draft I entered was a 10-team, standard scoring league with the picks going in a snake order. I have never participated in a PPR league. Therefore all the insights that I give will be helpful only for standard scoring.

Round 1 – Mike Evans – WR – Tampa Bay

In discussing my first pick, I have to discuss the Big 6. In all of Fantasy Football this year, there are the top six players. These players are Le’Veon Bell, David johnson, Antonio Brown, Ezekiel Elliott, Julio Jones and Odell Beckam, Jr. The order where they are chosen really doesn’t matter. They should be chosen with the first six picks of the first round. If they are not, someone messed up.

Unfortunately for me, I had the seventh pick in this particular draft. The seventh pick is interesting. You missed out on the Big 6 players, however you get 7 & 10. So technically you will get two Top 10 players while those guys with the Big 6 only get one.

I chose Mike Evans because I believe he is the seventh best player in fanstasy               football. He will not and should not be considered part of the Big 6; but he is the next closest thing. He will receive a good share of the targets in Tampa Bay and he will have a lot of catches and the potential for a lot of touchdowns.

Round 2 – Devonta Freeman – RB – Atlanta

For the second round, I wanted to pick up the best running back available. There were some good wide receivers still on the board for pick #10. However I felt like getting a Top 5 receiver and a Top 5 running back would be setting my team up for success.

Devonta Freeman is a duel threat with his great running ability and his ability to catch the ball.

Round 3 – Alshon Jeffrey – WR – Philiadelphia

Round 3 is where a player has to decide where he wants to get his bacon. They have to decide whether they want to get their points from wide receivers or running backs. The key to this move is once you make it, you have to be committed to it. I decided to get my points from wide receivers. Therefore I chose Alshon Jeffrey. He is the best receiver on a team where he should see a lot of targets.

Round 4 – DeAndre Hopkins – WR – Houston

Like I said above, once you make a commitment you have to stick with it. Therefore I chose the best wide receiver still on the board. I have to confess that I had Hopkins on my fantasty team last year and he killed me for all except one week. I am trusting the Osweiler trade is enough to bring Hopkins fantasy prospects back to life. Mostly I made the pick because of the commitment I made.

Rounds 5-8 tomorrow…
